Chess Club
The St. Dominic Chess Club meets on the 2nd and 4th Mondays from November through March in the Marcy Center. Each meeting starts with a lesson from a certified chess coach from Wisconsin Scholastic Chess Federation (WSCF) followed by playing time supervised by the coach and volunteer parents. Chess Club is open to all students from 3rd to 8th grade. No experience is required to join. Don't know how to play? We'll teach you! The season wraps up with in an all-club round-robin tournament in March. This is a fun event with snacks and beverages, and prizes are awarded to all participants.
Chess Club members can participate in Wisconsin Scholastic Chess tournaments held on Saturdays throughout the chess season. Participation in tournaments is encouraged but not required. Information about upcoming tournaments in the metro Milwaukee area will be provided at chess club meetings. A full schedule of WSCF tournaments can be found on their Web site. In March 2009, five members of the chess club represented St. Dominic for the first time in a tournament. They participated in the St. John the Baptist tournament in Plymouth and came home with a 4th place team trophy. Way to go! Why Chess? Chess is a great "mind sport". Research has shown that playing chess can help students in many areas including problem-solving, concentration, memory, social skills and even reading and math abilities. More Information St. Dominic Chess Club coordinators are Michael O'Brien and Sue Kahler.
