St. Dominic School was awarded Exemplary Status by the Archdiocese of Milwaukee in the area of Innovative Programs for its SMART Team. Previously part of the accreditation process, the Exemplary Schools Program is now a separate process to identify schools with exceptional programs.  Schools applied for recognition in several categories by submitting written applications.  Schools with superior written applications were selected to be visited by a team of experts. The visiting team recognized that the SMART Team program was an exceptionally effective tool for promoting outstanding student learning. St. Dominic is only one of four schools (out of 114 elementary schools in the Milwaukee Archdiocese) identified as having exemplary programs.

Student Achiever Awards

St. Dominic School students who received the “Highest Academic Achievement” and the “Highest Academic Effort” Awards from the Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation and the Milwaukee Brewers Baseball Club are:

Highest Academic Achievement (Grade 8) –Rachel Mlsna, Nick Reit and Evan Wetzel
Highest Academic Achievement (Grade 7) – Vienna George, Abigail Weisse and Matthew Wickeham
Highest Academic Effort (Grade 8) –Jack O’Grady, Emily Ott and Keegan von Estorff
Highest Academic Effort (Grade 7) –Erin Rieger, Tiana Rohe and Daniel Storts

St. Dominic Eighth Grader Emily Ott was awarded the Rose and Louis Scrima Scholarship from Catholic Memorial High School! There is only one Scrima Scholarship awarded to an incoming freshman each year. It is a $1,500 renewable scholarship for four years at Catholic Memorial (a total value of $6,000).

Catholic Memorial High School would also like to recognize the following students from St. Dominic: Rachel Mlsna, Nicholas Reit, and Evan Wetzel.  These students were finalists in the Louis and Rose Scrima Scholarship competition. To be a finalist, students must take the CMH placement test (for 8th graders in November) and earn a score ranking them in the top 10. This year there were 187 students that took the placement test and the top 10 students were chosen as finalists. The final step of the scholarship competition is a short panel interview, focusing on faith, service and leadership.

St. Dominic School Eighth Grader Nick Reit (8S) was offered a $500.00 Tuition scholarship from Marquette University High School for receiving one of the top three scores on this year’s Entrance Exam. Four hundred and ninety-five eighth grade students, representing 147 different schools took the exam.

St. Dominic School is proud of the academic achievement, faith life and leadership qualities of our students.  It is this dedication to hard work and achievement that will prepare them for future success as adults.  As Scripture states: “He who sows sparingly will reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will reap bountifully.”  2 Corinthians 9:6

American Mathematics Contest

On November 8th, 2010, the St. Dominic School seventh and eighth graders competed in The American Mathematics Competition sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America and the Akamai Foundation. Over 150,000 students from 2,200 schools nationally and internationally participated in this competition. The purpose of this contest is to spur interest in mathematics and to develop problem solving abilities through the excitement of friendly competition in a timed format. The Akamai Foundation is dedicated to excellence in mathematics in the hopes that they can encourage America’s next generation to become mathematical innovators, especially in the fields of technology. This is one of the few forums that allow students to compete internationally with other students in an academic area and in the process of doing this, help them to realize that mathematics can be very exciting and rewarding.

The following is a list of the top St. Dominic students:

  • The 1st place winner was Sean Thompson (8L). Sean also received an Honor Roll certificate for the contest, which means that he was in the top five percent of all the students worldwide that took the test! Sean will receive a first place award certificate and pin. His name will be inscribed on the American Mathematics Award Plaque at our school.

  • Overall School Winners for the Math Contest: 1st Place: Sean Thompson(8L) 2nd Place Tie: Brandon Diaz(7B) and Evan Wetzel(8S) 3rd Place Tie: Andrew Hirsch(7B), Haley Lange(8S), Emily Ott(8L) and Nick Reit(8S)

I’d like to congratulate all of our students that took part in this contest, and also our 7th and 8th Grade Math Teachers, Mrs. JoAnne Bischof and Ms. Donna LaFlamme on these outstanding results. Compared to many of the larger schools that took part in this contest, some may consider St. Dominic’s to be a “small” school. But this contest proves once again that even as a “small” school, St. Dominic’s can compete with the very best. There is nothing small if God is in it. As Scripture states: “If you have faith as a mustard seed, you shall say to this mountain, „move from here to there, and it shall move; and nothing shall be impossible to you.” Matthew 17: 20

National Association of Biology Teachers’ Convention

Ms. Donna LaFlamme, our Junior High Science teacher, was selected to deliver a presentation at the National Association of Biology Teachers' Convention in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Ms. LaFlamme collaborated with Karen DeBoer, a teacher at Kettle Moraine High School in presenting their work entitled: Bird Flu Knocking on the Door: Molecular Stories from the Center for BioMolecular Modeling of the Milwaukee School of Engineering. The project involved designing a hands-on workshop in Molecular & Cell Biology for High School and Two Year College students.
